AudioSuede, first founded at the beginning of 2010, is a site dedicated to the love and appreciation of music, to informing the masses of news and events that matter, and to exemplify integrity within the fields of music criticism and music journalism.
Our Mission Statement:
- Our opinions are based on reasoned, logical arguments which we can knowledgably provide in a clear and understandable fashion. However, our opinions are just that: Opinions. No one is more aware of that than we are, and we welcome dissenting opinions from anyone, anywhere, anytime.
- We do not, under any circumstances, judge any music based on nothing but our biases. We believe there is a criterion for what makes good music and what makes bad music, and if we think we might be biased, we will be wholly up front with that information so the reader can make up his or her own mind.
-It’s not about us, it’s about the music.
-We challenge our readers to respectfully pay attention. Weigh every point made before claiming some sort of fault in our reasoning. That way, if you still think we’re wrong, at least you can back up your assertion.
That said, we love and welcome any and all readers who might find us, and we hope that this site is as fun for you to read as it is for us to make.
The Staff
Christian Hagen (Founder/Editor-in-Chief)
Christian is a young buck music journalist from Minneapolis. His work has appeared on Pajiba, The Music Is The Message, and The Minnesota State University Reporter. AudioSuede is his baby, and he will try to raise it right.
Caspar (Contributor)
Caspar lives in London and writes and thinks about music and books and things in the spare time he has away from the job that he doesn’t quite understand.
Chris feels awkward when there is silence instead of music. He resides and teaches high school English in Minneapolis, co-runs and writes about pop culture for The Blogulator, and has written about music for Pajiba, The Music is the Message, and Reveille. But the obsessiveness doesn’t end there: he also plays guitar in his band Paragraphs and incessantly updates music and movie-related lists at I Can’t Come Home, Grace. I’m an Adult.
Cooper Foyt
Cooper is a cynical semi-student and budding musical critic from St. Paul. His works have appeared on the kitchen fridge but that is hopefully changing for the better. He is giddy with excitement to be on this staff.
Felicia specializes in threatening to punch people in the face, drinking large amounts of alcohol, making homemade enchiladas and speaking her mind. Minneapolis is where she calls home, even though for seven months out of the year she questions why the hell she lives there. The answer is because home is where the heart is and Minneapolis is one of the top music towns in the nation. She approaches music writing as a fan first, attempting to leave pretension aside. She doesn’t take any shit and has no fear of going Jersey Shore on your ass if you try. All this and more at her blog My Boring Life.
If you might be interested in writing for us, or if you have any questions/comments/feedback, feel free to send Christian a short email: christianhagen@live.com

I'm usually a music and lyrics person myself, but you should really check out the band Tapes 'n Tapes, especially the song Insistor from their "The Loon" album. I've listened to it again and again just for the drums – pretty incredible!
His writing is the same in all his songs. The terrible thing about hip hop today or at least shit that get radio play is they just seem to make up words or use words with double meanings but only to them(the artists). So half the time im not sure what the fuck they're trying to say. Theres just nothing clever about what comes out their mouths and it makes me a little sad thats what most people see as hip hop today.
great list. i would only add the Who's "Happy Jack" or "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere". aside from the fact that he was insanely talented and often sounded like he had maybe one or two extra arms, Keith Moon, to me, was the first drummer that wouldn't confine himself to just "keeping the beat". he focused more on fills and accents and really played the drums almost like they were a lead instrument rather than just backing rythm.
Paul Simon's "Late in the Evening." Steve Gadd can bring it, I suggest you take a listen. Or for that matter, "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover," also Steve Gadd.
Oh, my, Christian. The first time I heard that strange little drum lick in "Instant Karma" it did such a fantastic job of pushing that song forward for me that it completely changed my opinion. What had been a pleasant enough Lennon rocker became something else altogether, in a way that I can't explain in words… but I feel like you get it and that pleases me.
I also agree that Ringo Starr has to be mentioned as one of rock's premier drummers. The fills, patterns and cymbal work on every Beatles recording are
masterful and perfectly placed.
To throw in one more, John Bonham's elegantly understated yet incredibly powerful drum beat opening to "When the Levee Breaks" is the foundation for one of their greatest songs. By underplaying, he actually made the song that much stronger.
Yes, I am a drummer and I really do appreciate this column Thanks for the good work!
well, if we're certainly putting KOL as total sellouts, we've got to say for whatever weird incarnation the Smashing Pumpkins currently are, the old Smashing Pumpkins albums are chock full of joyous drumming.
Looks like the source is down can anyone provide a replacement? Thanks!
What is your opinion? Personally, I dislike the stereotype that women dont know as much about scratching, records, and beatmatching as guys do, since it is a male ego driven field. I think that female DJs can be just as good and even better than men at djing. What do you think?
Any list of today's best drummers that doesn't include Travis Barker can be considered irrelevant.
Whether you love that guy or dislike him, you must ask yourself if having these kinds of opinionated men and women on a news tv channel is absolutely doing good for The us and freedom in general. I would love to see the news channels go back to reporting facts, definitely not opinion.
Add Dr. Dog to the "good taste in music" category.
Just getting into jj, and I am loving them. Great pick Polley.
