I'm usually a music and lyrics person myself, but you should really check out the band Tapes 'n Tapes, especially the song Insistor from their "The Loon" album. I've listened to it again and again just for the drums – pretty incredible!

great list. i would only add the Who's "Happy Jack" or "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere". aside from the fact that he was insanely talented and often sounded like he had maybe one or two extra arms, Keith Moon, to me, was the first drummer that wouldn't confine himself to just "keeping the beat". he focused more on fills and accents and really played the drums almost like they were a lead instrument rather than just backing rythm.

Oh, my, Christian. The first time I heard that strange little drum lick in "Instant Karma" it did such a fantastic job of pushing that song forward for me that it completely changed my opinion. What had been a pleasant enough Lennon rocker became something else altogether, in a way that I can't explain in words… but I feel like you get it and that pleases me.
I also agree that Ringo Starr has to be mentioned as one of rock's premier drummers. The fills, patterns and cymbal work on every Beatles recording are
masterful and perfectly placed.
To throw in one more, John Bonham's elegantly understated yet incredibly powerful drum beat opening to "When the Levee Breaks" is the foundation for one of their greatest songs. By underplaying, he actually made the song that much stronger.
