Help Wanted

Help Wanted

Hey there folks,

First off, I want to thank you for taking the time to look at our humble little site. A lot of work has gone into making it, and every one of us here at AudioSuede is certainly grateful for your eyes and ears.

Recently, we’ve been in need of some extra help, and I thought, ‘What better place to begin looking than in our own backyard?’

Some important info up front:

-First, you should know that our writers are not paid, at least for now. I’ve chosen to this point to avoid advertising on our site, which would violate our aesthetic and slow our load times. This means that I’m running this site at a loss, paying for hosting and domain fees completely out of pocket. I say this up front so there is no confusion; we’re not here to cheat you of your time.

-What our writers do get is: A sounding board, a creative and open space to express themselves, a place where their opinions count equally with everyone else’s, the opportunity to write in different styles about a wide range of topics at their discretion, tremendous experience, and a chance to build a portfolio that could one day result in professional work, or could aid in the advancement of professional work.

-We are an editorial site first and foremost, but we are open to news. This is not, however, a place for PR professionals to promote without basis or with the intention of profit. If you like something, say it loud. But you need to be able to explain why.

-Creativity is encouraged. Read some of Sam Gelfand’s posts, look at the various series that Chris Polley and Dan Wipert have maintained on this site, or some of Chris Bosman’s essays, and you can start to get a sense of the variety of work we’re open to.

-You don’t have to be a professional to do this. Remember, none of us gets paid to do this, but we love music and we happen to be good at articulating our opinions. If that describes you too, you’re probably a good fit for this position.

Now, the details of the work:

-We need a writer who can produce a minimum of 600 words a week. We’re open to accommodating based on your schedule; you won’t be required to write something on a night when you have something major and unavoidable on your plate, so long as you let me know in advance. Your work will need to be submitted to the editor before 9pm the night before posting each week so it can be formatted and uploaded and we can all go to bed on time.

-Obviously, we’re an indie-focused site, but we’re not beyond diverse genres and tastes (everything from rock to rap to pop to donk to ambient to shoegaze-funk-grindcore-banana-peel (I’m not sure that last one is a genre…yet)). Whatever you’re into (within reason), you’re likely to be able to fit it in here. (Parentheticals)

-Again, you don’t need to be a professional, and there’s no application to fill out. If you’re interested in the position, email me at the address listed below, and send me the following info: Who you are, where you’re from, what you want to write about, why you want to write for us, what kind of music you’re into (specifics help here), and some ideas you have for things you’d like to write for us. If you can send one or two examples of your work (a review, an essay, a list, something with a little length so I can grasp your style), that would really help. Doesn’t have to be unbearably formal, just looking to get an idea of who you are if you’re interested in writing for us.

If you’re interested in this position, email Christian Hagen at christianhagen@audiosuede.com with the information listed above.

I look forward to hearing from you.

-Christian Hagen
